Pakistan Army Major General Appointed Force Commander of UN Mission in Western Sahara

Major General Jawwad Ahmed Qazi

The United Nations Secretary-General named Major General Jawwad Ahmed Qazi as the new force commander for the UN mission in Western Sahara. Pakistan’s permanent UN mission shared this announcement on social media recently. General Qazi brings extensive leadership experience to the UN mission in Western Sahara. He holds over thirty-five years of operational and military expertise. His background includes various roles within the Pakistan military and global peacekeeping operations.

Throughout his distinguished career, General Qazi held multiple senior positions at home and abroad. His previous domestic assignments include commanding an infantry division and serving as director general within the defence ministry. Furthermore, he led forces in the northern areas of the country. Earlier postings also feature international service with the United Nations Transitional Administration in Croatia.

Pakistan expressed immense pride regarding this important international leadership selection. The nation remains fully dedicated to advancing global peace and stability. Officials emphasized ongoing support for international security through mission-ready military contingents and experienced leaders.

The regional territory involves complex post-colonial disputes across the African continent. Morocco largely controls the area, while the Algerian-backed Polisario Front demands self-determination. The Polisario Front advocates for indigenous Sahrawi rights through a monitored vote. Both factions previously accepted a nineteenth-nineties agreement outlining a supervised referendum framework for the disputed region.
